If you’ve ever stood in a chilly downstairs room while the upstairs of your house felt like a sauna, you already understand the biggest flaw of a traditional central air system: it treats your whole home as one temperature zone. On a recent episode of Home Improvement USA, hosts Dave Rush and Steve Leventhal sat down with Roy Kucera, Vice President and Board Member at Fujitsu General America, to talk about a different approach — ductless mini-split heating and cooling systems.
Here’s what homeowners, business owners, and anyone considering a heating and cooling upgrade need to know.
What Is a Ductless Mini-Split System?
A traditional central air system relies on one large outdoor unit connected to an indoor unit that pushes conditioned air through a network of ductwork hidden in your walls, floors, and attic. That ductwork is convenient, but it’s also inefficient — a lot of heating and cooling capacity is lost simply traveling through the ducts before it ever reaches a room.
A ductless mini-split system skips the ductwork entirely. Instead, small indoor units are installed directly in or near the living space, connected to an outdoor unit through thin copper refrigerant lines rather than bulky ducts. Because the conditioned air doesn’t have to travel through walls or attics to reach you, the system runs more efficiently and delivers comfort exactly where it’s needed.
This technology has been common in Asia and Europe for years and is increasingly popular with U.S. homeowners looking for more efficient, flexible climate control.
What Does a Mini-Split Unit Actually Look Like?
Indoor units come in a few styles, but the most common is a wall-mounted unit that resembles a slim appliance — roughly 30 inches wide, 10 to 11 inches tall, and extending only about 8 inches from the wall. It connects to the outdoor unit through thin-walled copper tubing that carries refrigerant back and forth.
Most Fujitsu General America systems are heat pumps, meaning they do double duty:
- In cooling mode, the system pulls heat out of your home and releases it outdoors.
- In heating mode, the compressor reverses, pulling heat from the outside air — even when it’s cold — and moving it indoors.
According to Kucera, these systems can continue extracting usable heat from outdoor air down to about -15°F, making them a legitimate heating solution even in colder climates.
Why Mini-Splits Solve the “Hot Upstairs, Cold Downstairs” Problem
Central air systems typically operate as an on/off system for the whole house. If the upstairs needs more cooling, the whole system runs harder — often overcooling the downstairs in the process.
Mini-split systems avoid this thanks to inverter technology, which uses variable-speed compressors instead of a simple on/off cycle. Each indoor unit can ramp up or down independently, delivering just the right amount of heating or cooling to that specific space.
This also means you can:
- Set different temperatures in different rooms
- Avoid conditioning empty rooms (guest rooms, unused spaces, or areas you’re away from during the day)
- Cut energy waste by only cooling or heating the parts of the home actually in use
Fujitsu General America offers configurations ranging from one indoor unit paired with one outdoor unit, up to eight indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit — allowing for room-by-room control across an entire home.
Perfect for Additions, Retrofits, and Awkward Spaces
One of the most practical uses for a mini-split system is home additions. Extending your existing ductwork to cover a new room adds strain to your central air compressor and increases energy use. Instead, a dedicated mini-split unit can condition just the new space — quietly and efficiently — without overworking your existing system or requiring a noisy window unit or PTAC.
Mini-splits are also a strong option when:
- Your home’s ductwork was originally sized for heating and struggles to handle central air efficiently
- Modifying your ductwork would trigger costly recertification requirements
- You’re converting a garage, finishing a basement, or adding a home office
- You’re managing a small commercial space like a bakery, pizza shop, or salon
Installation is minimal by comparison: technicians typically only need to drill a small opening (about three inches in diameter) to run the refrigerant lines, drain line, and electrical connection between the indoor and outdoor units.
Residential, Commercial, and Everything In Between
Fujitsu General America’s ductless technology isn’t limited to houses. Kucera notes the systems show up in:
- Single-family homes — from Florida garage conversions to Montana log cabins
- Small businesses like restaurants and bakeries
- Schools and nursing homes
- High-rise buildings, using commercial units with capacities up to 30 tons, which can be banked together for large-scale climate control
New construction projects also benefit, with mini-split technology frequently used in Energy Star-certified homes.
What About Cost and Payback?
Mini-split systems typically cost more upfront in equipment than a comparable central air setup — but installation labor is often lower, since there’s no ductwork to install. According to Kucera, homeowners can see energy savings of roughly 40% compared to a central air alternative, which helps the system pay for itself over time. Many states and utility companies also offer rebates for high-efficiency heating equipment, particularly for the heating-mode performance mini-splits are known for.

Ductless mini-split systems are worth considering if:
- Your home has uneven temperatures between floors or rooms
